Last week, someone told me in a text that 'you're very smart'. My first reaction was not 'thank you', but a wish that they had told me I was pretty. What is that all about?
Every now and then, I need reminding of the fact that being smart is a good thing. I think all girls and women do. Too often I find myself getting obsessed about what I look like (or what I don't look like), about how people think of me, about the material things I do or don't have. But I forget. I forget that I AM a smart girl.
And I don't just mean book smarts, though my friends know I love academia- smart is lots of things. To me, being smart means:
- recognising my own self worth, and knowing my value is more about who I am than the skin I live in
- making the right choices for me and my health
- appreciating my family and friends
- not comparing myself to anyone else
- taking the time to do what I enjoy and I'm good at
- saying no when appropriate
- a quick answer to banter, solving crosswords and loving quiz programmes
- embracing all my geekdom
- not allowing others to make me feel bad, and accepting compliments from friends
- not being afraid to voice my opinion
and being smart means being me. All of me. In all my quirky, geeky, non-model like colours!
You're smart too. Go on, show off your smarts.
(This is a repost of an entry from a very old blog, because I needed another reminder!)
